March 9, 2015 (Monday) Repeat of River Fork Ranch, Genoa area
Last Monday the weather may have scared away painters, but three of us passed through Carson City's snow flurry and were rewarded to a sunny, mild morning at River Fork Ranch near Genoa! We liked it so much, we thought we'd go there again - and the weather forecast looks like it will be nice and warmer!
Date: March 9, 2015 (Monday)
Time: 10:00 am
Place: River Fork Ranch
Amenities: Whit Hall Interpretive Center is at the Preserve is not open and there are no bathrooms. Genoa is down the street maybe less than a mile - food and bathrooms are in the town. Genoa Country Store is a good place to visit
Parking: There is a large parking lot - free - open daily year-round
Restrictions: No dogs
River Fork Ranch is located at 381 Genoa Lane, Minden, NV 89423 near the historic town of Genoa in the Carson Valley.
Directions from Carson City: Drive south on 395 for 8.7 miles
Turn Right onto SR 206/Genoa Lane and continue for 2.4 miles
The preserve and parking area will be on your left and is well marked with a sign.
What is there: hiking trails, wildlife viewing, interesting woven flood plain control, wetlands, Carson River
To get to the views of the river - walk around the deck of the Interpretive Center and you will see a trail head. It follows the river going south and goes for 2 miles. The pictures I took above and below were the closest distance from the Interpretive Center. Parts of the trail were a little muddy, but next week should be drier and easy for carts.
What to bring:

May 19, 2014 (Monday) Virginia City Paint-Out

Place: Virginia City
Meeting place: About at the corner of Union Street and "I" Street

What to bring:
- camera
- painting gear
- drinking water, snack, lunch

letter I not the number 1) and park right there. Plenty of parking on the side
of the road.

Change to parking location for May 5, 2014 paint-out in Gardnerville/Minden
Since posting the paint-out for the Job's Peak view to take place on May 5, I have learned that I chose a less desirable parking area. The rancher needs the parking to access his cattle, and I learned that Mottsville Road is very busy and people drive fast.
So here is where we will meet:
Once you turn on Mottsville Road, go past the area first described a little ways. Turn left on the sidestreet called "Mottsville Meadow Way" - a dead end with only three houses on it. I was advised this is much safer and there is room to park and cul-de-sacs as well.
It is also going to windy and 20% chance of rain. So...... plan accordingly. Some people who have hatch-backed vehicles can use them as a wind-break. Some people do smaller works so they can finish faster. Some people have a lap-set-up that they can work from within their car if it is pointed in the right direction.....
Anyway, I'll be there....

May 5, 2014 View of Jobs Peak, Garnerville/Minden Paint-Out
![]() |
| taken on 4-27-14 around noon |
Date: May 5, 2014
Time: 9:30 am
Place: Mottsville Meadow Way, off of Mottsville Road, Garnerville/Minden area
Parking: Mottsville Meadow Way
Amenities: None there, but Minden is close by
Directions: From Reno, take 580 south to Carson City, Exit Fairview Drive, turn right, go to the intersection of old 395 and turn left. Stay on 395 into Carson Valley. Before you get into Minden, turn right on Hwy 88. Go 1.8 miles and turn right on Mottsville Road. Follow Mottsville Road almost 2 miles, turn Left on Mottsville Meadow Way. This is a better place than what I originally posted. It is off the main road (Mottsville Road - which is busy since it is access to Kingsbury Road). There are only 3 houses on this side road and there is a cul-de-sac to park at the end, and it is safe to park off this road as well.
We will be painting right by our cars. We will be about 6 miles from Genoa, if you want to wander over there to check it out.

April 1, 2013 (Monday) South Meadows Parkway, Reno
This is the first time in a while that a paint-out is being scheduled! Yesterday Monika, myself, and a new art friend Lisa painted at this location and we enjoyed it so much that we are coming back next Monday. Right now the forecast for April 1 is high of 65, 10% chance rain, winds 12 mph (usually in the afternoon), and cloudy. But we all know spring weather is variable. At least no big storm is due then!
Date: April 1, 2013
Time: 10:00 am or soon thereafter
Place: The very end of South Meadows Parkway (the east end) in Reno
Parking: Plenty of street parking at the dead end
Amenities: None. But there is a paved walking path that follows Steamboat Creek where people ride bikes and walk dogs
What to bring:
- camera
- painting gear
- drinking water
- plein air umbrella if you have one - just in case
- grocery bag to weight your easel or tripod with available rocks - just in case!
- hat
- sunscreen
Painting subject matter: Looking west, the view of Slide Mountain and Mt. Rose are beautiful this time of year with snow still on them. Looking east, you have Steamboat Creek and reeds and grasses. On the other side of the creek were a herd of wild horses. Looking north, you have Rattlesnake Mountain and a pond with reeds and grasses.
Directions: From downtown Reno area, take 580 south, exit at South Meadows Parkway. Go left (east) on South Meadows Parkway to the dead end.
