Here are specific directions from Reno:
Drive to South Lake Tahoe via 580 and then 50
At the "Y" turn right on Emerald Bay Road/89
Drive a few miles.  When you see Camp Richardson General Store, you are .9 miles from Cathedral Road.  Another landmark (as well as a pit-stop) is a little farther from Camp Richardson - and on the right is Taylor Creek Visitor Center signage.  At this point you are REAL CLOSE to Cathedral Road - like .3 miles.  You cross a little bridge over Taylor Creek and then you see a brown "Snow Park" sign pointing to your left.

Turn Left to go to the snow park.  PLEASE NOTE:  This year the Cathedral Road sign is missing so there is no identification to this narrow paved road.  After you turn in here:

about a hundred yards - the road splits.  To the left is the snow park and a pit toilet.  Go straight and it is Cathedral Road.  You will pass wildflowers:

.5 miles from the split in the road you will see a little trailhead parking area on your left:

If you like to take a little walk through the aspen and paint there you can, or, you can drive a little further like .1 mile where I will be:

Room for about 4 cars here on the side of the road, and walk over the low fence and a few steps into the meadow you will have the view in the first photo above.

July 2018 paint-outs

Hello all,

July is typically hot, so go as early as you can to beat the heat.  I recommend arriving by 9am.  8am is even better.  I have chosen areas that are in the mountains or in the shade of forest because it is a little cooler than the Reno area.  For the month of July, I recommend you bring the following:

• More drinking water than usual
• Umbrella and a wide-brim hat
• kerchief that you can wet and tie around your neck to cool down
• a small ice chest with ice to cool down
• Sunscreen AND bug spray
• lunch and snacks (avoid fried chicken and meats that attracts yellow jackets)
• antihistamine for allergy and unexpected bee stings
• folding chair
• cash for day use fees if required
• camera
• cell phone
• Be aware some of these places (Blue Lakes, Cathedral Road) does not have cell service
• a grocery bag that you can fill with rocks to weight your tripod down from blowing over

July 9, 10:  Cathedral Road (the other side of Fallen Leaf Lake) When you see the link below, this is only one area you can paint.  I don't have a prior post for the second site, but I will try to describe it here:  Go past this spot about a quarter mile. On the left side there is a grove of aspen trees.  Find your way through the aspen trees and you will come upon a hidden meadow that is solid lupin bushes.  They are normally in bloom in July.  Be respectful and only use the trail that goes through it - don't make any new trails please.  This is a spectacular meadow and you can see Mount Tallac above the trees.  see link:  https://renotahoepleinairpainters.blogspot.com/search?q=Cathedral+Road

Fall 2014 Paint-Out Schedule

About six of us met at Sand Harbor yesterday and I got input from others for great fall paint-out locations.  Thank you all for your input and photos and directions!  It was hard to pick from the list, but I chose some new spots and some places we have been in the past.  I tried to alternate locations between Lake Tahoe, Reno/Carson and Hope Valley area.  As you know, exactly when the fall foliage is turning is impossible to predict.  But, I basically tried for higher elevations first, and then the lower elevations later.

Sept. 22, 2014 - Lily Lake/Falls nearby - Fallen Leaf Lake Road area
Sept. 29, 2014 - Spooner Lake - summit of Highway 50 above Lake Tahoe
Oct. 6, 2014 - Red Lake (the lower end) east side of Carson Pass (Highway 88)
Oct. 13, 2014 - Aspen Grove Park - Incline Village
Oct. 20, 2014 - Luther Pass Ranch - few miles up 89 from Pickett Junction - overlooks Hope Valley
Oct. 27, 2014 - Tamarack Lake (1 mile east of Mt. Rose Summit)
Nov. 3, 2014 - Taylor Creek or Cathedral Road - near Fallen Leaf Lake
Nov. 10, 2014 - Lower Galena Creek - Joy Lake Road off of Mt. Rose Hwy
Nov. 17, 2014 - Hope Valley or Faith Valley
