Reno Tahoe Plein Air Painters will be going offline

Hello painters,

It has been six years (or more?) that I have been posting paint-outs for this group that I started, and it is time for me to retire from the job, retire the blog and retire the group.

Life changes, and our art goes through growth and changes too.  This is true for me now.  I am finding I want to go in new directions, explore new methods and try new types of art in the studio.

I met wonderful artists and made many friends through this group and we learned from each other of beautiful locations to paint.  We all gained experience and confidence with the outdoor painting experience.  I'll always have great memories.

A special Thank You to those of you who helped with organizing paint-outs and putting together and hanging our shows that we had over the years.

Best of luck to all of you in your artistic journey.

I'll leave the blog up for a few months if you want to look up areas to paint on location.  Then, I will most likely remove it from the web.

Peace,

Carolyn

September 2018 paint-outs

Hi painters,

I hope you have been painting one way or another.  July-August we had terrible smoke/haze (as well as high 90s and triple digit heat) for about 4 weeks.  I found it uncomfortable to breathe, so I stayed in and dabbled in the studio a bit.

September is the month a few parts of cottonwoods turn, and the rabbit brush bloom.  Other than that, it is not really much autumn colors.  October I will pick some good color locations.

September:

Time to meet:  9:00 am
See previous posts for these locations

Monday 4th - Labor Day - no paint-out
Tuesday 5th:  Crystal Peak Park, Verdi
Mon/Tues 10th and 11: Tahoe Meadows (top of Mt. Rose Hwy)
Mon/Tues 17th and 18th:  Riverfork Ranch Preserve, Genoa
Mon/Tues 24th and 25th:  Hidden Valley Regional Park, Reno

August Paint-Outs

August Paint-Outs:

August is the month of yellow jacket bees... I suggest you do not bring meat sandwiches or fried chicken for your lunch!!!  If you are allergic to bee stings, bring your meds.  Also, bring sunscreen and bug spray for mosquitoes.  Happy painting!!!

Monday/Tuesdays:

6 and 7:     Bliss State Park (search blog for prior directions - be sure to get to the beach parking by 9am because campers will drive their from campground and the lot fills up.  There is an upper lot and a lower lot.  Take your pick.  Remember, there is a day-use fee.

13 and 14:     Thomas Creek Trail (search blog for prior directions)

20 and 21:     Tallac Historical Site (New location!)  This site is adjacent to Taylor Creek Park at South Lake Tahoe but has its own sign and entrance.  There is a fee because it is a heritage site - envelopes at parking area.  Be sure to get there by 9am as it is a small parking lot.  There are many old time 1920's cabins and houses and you can also walk inside some of them.  Please paint outside and do not block the paths.  There is also a beach and there is also some flower gardens.  I do not think they will allow you to paint in the arboretum area where the water features are.  I have visited this site and if you want, you can also sign up for a docent tour.  See their website here:  http://www.tahoeheritage.org/events-and-programs-2/tallac-historic-site/
See also:  https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1798615-d156888-Reviews-Tallac_Historic_Site-South_Lake_Tahoe_Lake_Tahoe_California_California.html
If you get there and there is no parking, or it is not to your liking, there is Taylor Creek Park adjacent with trails, aspens, creek, beach, ranger office and gift store and bathroom there as well.  Free entrance.

27 and 28:     Davis Creek Regional Park - search the blog for prior directions.  (the day-use or picnic area - maybe the pond/lake still has water?)  I do not remember if there is a day use fee or not.

A new sign in Hope Valley

Hello painters,

One of our painters emailed me about a new sign he saw at the Hope Valley/Pickett Junction Restroom Area (junction of 88 and 89).  It says that every person 16 years and older is required to have a Land Use pass, that they should have it in their possession.  The passes can be purchased online (either day or annual) on the California Fish and Wildlife Department website.  The site is vague as to what areas require the pass.

I called Sorenson's Resort to see what they knew about this since they have guests to go for day hikes nearby.  They said that this is related to the fishing and hunting land use passes - which recently was lobbied to include "hikers" (not painters!)  The man I spoke to said at this time the sign wasn't being enforced to his knowledge.  Because the location is near the PCT trail (Pacific Crest Trail), many backpackers hike for weeks or months, and this sign appears to be directed to them.

So, unless you plan to backpack/paint/hike ....don't worry about the sign and enjoy your painting day!

P.S.  I haven't been to Blue Lakes in a few years.  Be mindful of signs and only park in "day use" areas.  Be sure to see if they charge a day use fee in the designated day use picnic areas.  Also, be mindful that the road from lake to lake has been very rough-going in the past and I doubt it would be much better with the harsh winters they have up there.  If the sign says 4WD you better also have high clearance.

July 2018 paint-outs

Hello all,

July is typically hot, so go as early as you can to beat the heat.  I recommend arriving by 9am.  8am is even better.  I have chosen areas that are in the mountains or in the shade of forest because it is a little cooler than the Reno area.  For the month of July, I recommend you bring the following:

  • More drinking water than usual
  • Umbrella and a wide-brim hat
  • kerchief that you can wet and tie around your neck to cool down
  • a small ice chest with ice to cool down
  • Sunscreen AND bug spray
  • lunch and snacks (avoid fried chicken and meats that attracts yellow jackets)
  • antihistamine for allergy and unexpected bee stings
  • folding chair
  • cash for day use fees if required
  • camera
  • cell phone
  • Be aware some of these places (Blue Lakes, Cathedral Road) does not have cell service
  • a grocery bag that you can fill with rocks to weight your tripod down from blowing over

July 2018:

July 2, 3:  Blue Lakes (7 miles from Hope Valley) see link:  https://renotahoepleinairpainters.blogspot.com/search?q=Blue+Lakes
July 9, 10:  Cathedral Road (the other side of Fallen Leaf Lake) When you see the link below, this is only one area you can paint.  I don't have a prior post for the second site, but I will try to describe it here:  Go past this spot about a quarter mile. On the left side there is a grove of aspen trees.  Find your way through the aspen trees and you will come upon a hidden meadow that is solid lupin bushes.  They are normally in bloom in July.  Be respectful and only use the trail that goes through it - don't make any new trails please.  This is a spectacular meadow and you can see Mount Tallac above the trees.  see link:  https://renotahoepleinairpainters.blogspot.com/search?q=Cathedral+Road
July 16, 17:  Galena Creek Park
July 23, 24:  Sand Harbor
July 30, 31:  Tahoe Meadows

February 2018 Paint-Out Schedule

Hi painters,

We are going to try something new - two paint-outs a week (same location) for Mondays and Tuesdays.  We believe there are enough painters that would attend either one.  For the real serious ones, going back to finish at the same location the next day might be advantageous (weather permitting of course).

MONDAY AND TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5 AND 6, 2018:

Sun Valley Regional Park, Sparks
10:00 am if not too cold.  11:00 if you want to wait a bit

Directions:

  • Go to the end.  Bennett Elementary School is on the right, and the entrance to the park is on the left
  • Note:  you will pass through a run-down area, but the ranger tells me the park is very safe.  The people I saw there had nice cars and trucks and I felt completely safe

MONDAY AND TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12 AND 13, 2018:

Riverfork Ranch, Genoa

Tips for painting outdoors in winter in snow country

January is here!  If the weather permits, and you dress warmly, paint-outs in January can be special.

Here are some tips for painting in snow country:

  • If there is snow and it is a sunny day ---- don't go snow-blind!!!!  It may alter your color sense, but do wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.  Peak now and then to check your colors and values.
  • Get a large board and place it behind your art panel to screen out the light coming around edges
  • Bring a black trash bag, an old blanket or tarp and place it in front of your easel so you don't get bounced light from the ground up into your eyes while you paint.
  • sorry - watercolor painting and acrylic painting may freeze.... try another medium, take photos or sketch
  • Wool socks, turtlenecks, wool sweater, fingerless gloves, wool hats, thermal underwear, handwarmer pouches, a thermos of hot drink, parka or wind-breaking jacket, heavy waterproof boots.... if you think you need them, bring them!
  • Oil painters - keep your tubes in the house the night before instead of your car.  Unstick any stubborn tube tops before you leave home.  Oil paints can get cold and hard to get out of the tube and also hard to paint with.  Medium helps to make paint spread easier when cold.
  • If you like to combine snowshoeing with your painting excursion, you can pull a plastic sled with you with your gear on it.  If you set up in soft snow, your tripod will sink down in the snow and might be too low.  The sled can also act as a support for your tripod and you stand in your snowshoes.
  • Painting snow:  Snow has colors in it.  Note the best snow paintings you have seen - if you held a white piece of paper up to the painting - you would find the snow was not painted with pure white out of the tube!  Another tip is to have both warm and cool colors in your snow - the warm colors will be where the sun has lit the snow, and the cool is where it falls away and is in shadow.

Tuesday December 12, 2017 Paint-Out South End of Little Washoe Lake

Let's Paint the South End of Little Washoe Lake!

Date:  TUESDAY, December 12, 2017
Time:  10:00 am
Location:  Little Washoe Lake - go past the pay hut, go straight down hill, keep going straight on dirt road at the end of the parking lot for the beach, continue around Little Washoe Lake taking the bends to the right.  Pull off where you want to paint or go the end where the dirt parking is and the bathroom (it is open)

Directions to Little Washoe Lake:  From Virginia Street/Mount Rose Highway intersection, take 395 south about 6 miles.  After you pass through Pleasant Valley you will go up a hill (Washoe Hill).  At the top, turn left on East Lake Boulevard.  Almost immediately you will cross a cattle guard and then turn right into the park entrance.  There is an entrance fee year-round, but you can take your chances.  See above for how to go to the south end.

It is slightly muddy-slick in some areas near the water.  Today I visited (Dec 6) and took these pictures.  A large herd of wild horses came down to drink at the lake.

Sorry Oxbow Nature Area is closed

I'm so sorry.  I didn't know Oxbow Park was closed for repairs until I arrived here!  They are closed till the end of January for repairs.

Something New On The RTPAP Blog

November 3, 2017

SOMETHING NEW ON THE RTPAP BLOG

Hi painters,

Since I'm back to administering this plein air painters blog, I made a few changes in the lay-out you may notice.  I moved some of the items from the left-hand column over to the right side.  The left-hand column is now just "member related".

I have added a section at the bottom of the "member related" column called "Advertisements - Member Shows and Art Lessons".   I added my own Open Studio show and lessons offered there as an example.  Advertising your exhibit, open studio and art classes you offer can now be advertised on this blog at a low price.  Because administering this blog is totally volunteered by me, and my time is worth something, I need to charge for this advertising for you.

Here is a link to the blog for you to see changes.... https://renotahoepleinairpainters.blogspot.com/

There will be only one type of ad:

Short Form - only the event, name, date, time and location and link to your website page for more information.

The fees are set up as follows:

1-2 month Fee:  $10   - up to 2 months before event date.  After event date it will be deleted.
3-6 month Fee:  $20  - for ongoing art lessons up to 6-month run
12-month Fee:  $40 - for ongoing art lessons up to a 12-month run

Note:  Updating your links:  If over time you change the page link in your website, you must notify me, the administrator, and provide me the new link to your information about your event.  Having a broken link or "page not found" won't help you in your advertising.

Please note:  These ads will just appear on the blog - they will not be sent out to subscribers in the form of an email.  I do not want the subscribers to be deluged by email advertisements.  I want this blog to keep to the original plan - plein air paint-outs scheduled for people to attend for free.

Happy Painting,
Carolyn Jean Thompson

Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 - Little Washoe Lake Paint-Out

Monday, October 30, 2017 - Little Washoe Lake Paint-Out

Date:  Monday, October 30, 2017
Time:  10:00 am
Place:  Little Washoe Lake State Park
Directions from Reno:  Take old 395 (Virginia Street) through Pleasant Valley.  When you get to the top of Washoe Hill, get in left turning lane and turn left onto East Lake Boulevard.  After crossing cattle guard, make your first right into park.  There is a booth and a self-pay thing, then make your first right on an old paved road that is rough.  This old road will take you to the north side of Little Washoe Lake where all these photos were taken.

Amenities:  Bathroom (I don't know if it is open in off-season) at the beach parking if you were to go straight ahead.

If you choose to turn right on the old road, go to the end and then turn left.  Turn around at the end and park along the edge.  There are two areas where there are steps down to the beach and a couple of picnic tables.  These might be used by people with dogs fetching in the water - a popular place for locals, and I noticed they did not pay the entry fee of $5.00.

If you choose to park in the parking lot at the beach where the bathroom is - it might be a good idea to pay the fee.

Another option is to continue past the beach parking on the dirt road that loops around the lake and deadends in a parking lot.  There is a pit toilet there and the views are mostly willows and wetlands if you like that sort of subject.

Monday, October 23, 2017 Paint-Out at local aspens

Monday, October 23, 2017 Paint-Out

Date:     Monday, October 23, 2017
Time:    10:00 am
Place:     Galena Creek Trailhead - off of Callahan Road
To get there:  Take Mt. Rose Highway, pass Thomas Creek light signal by about a mile and a half.  Turn left on Callahan Road.  Go about a mile and a half, parking and trailhead on right.
Amenities:  big parking area, portapottie, nice trail.  Trail used by dog walkers.  Lots of area to set up off of trail.  Another trail is on the other side of the creek.  I didn't see as many aspens in the beginning part of the trail, but it is in full-sun.

First off - I'm sorry there were no paint-outs in September.  I have been going to physical therapy and too sore to do much of anything.

Today (October 19) I took a brief look-about at this location because I heard it was in peak color.  Hopefully, by Monday, the leaves will not have blown all away.....

This location has a big parking area:

These pictures were taken at 11am.  The best trail is on the shady side, so I chose a later meeting time.  Please be aware that this time a year the light changes through the trees REALLY fast!  Try not to chase the light!  Take pictures before you start and as the light changes on your subject, stick to what your camera has in memory and stick to the light/shadow patterns you started with.
