"In the Open" our first exhibition is on display!

Today we hung our first exhibition at South Valleys Library in Reno "In the Open". The participating artists are:

What is plein air painting?

En plein air (French) translates to "in the open air". It just means painting in outdoor daylight. The French Impressionistic movement in the 1800's brought a group of painters outside to "paint light and color", which rebelled against the style of the French Academy. This new artistic style then came to California and became known as California Impressionism or California plein air painting. Paintings done in the outdoors are often "fresh" and not "over-worked", as compared to studio work, which the artist is free to work as long as he/she wishes.
