Paint-Out to Hope Valley, and WHY I wasn't there!

While I was on a trip to Newport Beach, California for a week's vacation, Carol, Michael and Emma went to Hope Valley, California to paint! I am so envious - I love that area. But, there will be other times...

What is plein air painting?

En plein air (French) translates to "in the open air". It just means painting in outdoor daylight. The French Impressionistic movement in the 1800's brought a group of painters outside to "paint light and color", which rebelled against the style of the French Academy. This new artistic style then came to California and became known as California Impressionism or California plein air painting. Paintings done in the outdoors are often "fresh" and not "over-worked", as compared to studio work, which the artist is free to work as long as he/she wishes.
