June 30, 2014 (Monday) Fallen Leaf Lake Paint-Out

Time:          9:00 am
Place:          Fallen Leaf Lake
Meeting Place:          Pull off at the beginning of Fallen Leaf Lake Road and we will discuss the different locations to paint.
Amenities:          Close to Taylor Creek Visitor Center - ranger station, shop, restrooms.  Also, at the end of Fallen Leaf Lake Road is a snack shack, gift shop and restrooms

Locations to park 'n paint:    

The first meadow you come to on the right.  Pull off to the side of the road.  You can see a meadow, aspen grove and Mt. Tallac.  If you hike a short distance down the dirt service road (1212) you will come to the top photo of buildings the Forest Service uses.  If there are no signs instructing no admittance, you can paint there.
The end of Fallen Leaf Lake Road is the boat launch and snack shack and gift shop.  Parking is limited.  But the view is lovely.
What to bring:

  • camera
  • art gear
  • art umbrella, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • bug spray
  • good walking shoes
  • drinking water and snack/lunch
  • swim suit?  Will we be at 100 degrees?
Directions:    From downtown Reno, allow 1 hr and 20 min.  Also, there may be road work in South Lake Tahoe, so be prepared for a little delay.

From Reno:  Take 580 south to Carson City, take the Fairview Exit to old 395.  Turn Left at old 395/Carson Blvd.  Turn right at Highway 50 to South Lake Tahoe.  Continue through South Lake Tahoe to the "Y".  Turn Right on 89/Emerald Bay Road.  Go 3 miles.  Turn Left on Fallen Leaf Lake Road and pull over to the side to meet us.  

Bathrooms and drinking water at Taylor Creek Visitor Center:  Before you turn left on Fallen Leaf Lake Road, go a little further (about 1/4 mile) and turn right into the Taylor Creek Visitor Center.

June 23, 2014 (Monday) Tahoe Meadows (Mt. Rose) Paint-out

PLEASE NOTE:  This location is a change from the original location of Lake Forest Beach.

THERE MAY BE ROAD WORK ON MT. ROSE HWY - BE PREPARED TO STOP
There may still be some wildflowers here!

Directions:  From Reno:  take the Mt. Rose Hwy, pass the top summit and as you start to go downhill, look for the turn-out on the left where the entrance to the trailhead is and the parking lot.

From Incline, go up the Mt. Rose Hwy and look for the entrance to the trailhead parking on the right side just as you go through half of the meadow.

June 9, 2014 (Monday) Hike 'n Sketch Eagle Lake (OR) paint Eagle Falls

Place:         Eagle Lake Trailhead, near Emerald Bay
Parking:      Free parking on the street in front of the trailhead
Additional Parking:   Fee parking inside entrance to trailhead.
Hikers Meeting Place:     Near the bathrooms (upwind!)
Non-Hikers Meeting Place:  There is no leader for this group.  Just find each other in the parking areas

You have a choice of:  the hike 'n sketch Eagle Lake, (OR) paint Eagle Falls which is across the road from the parking area.  Your choice!  Hikers, please email me that you wish to join me so I look for you.  Email me at carolynjean@carolynjeanthompson.com

HIKERS PLEASE NOTE:  We will be taking the trail to Eagle Lake.  This is a one-mile hike uphill.  Although it is short, it is uphill and there are big granite steps at times.  Hiking boots recommended and hiking poles are very helpful.  A LIGHT BACKPACK IS A MUST.  Bring plenty of water!  Scale your art materials down to the lightest weight possible.  If that means doing a pencil sketch or taking a small watercolor set, or a mini acrylic or oil set, please do so.  Bring your camera for future photographic references for a studio painting.

What to bring:

  • light weight painting gear - lighter than what you usually do
  • small backpack
  • camera
  • drinking water - twice as much as you usually bring
  • about $8 (?) for parking fee if you want to park inside the lot
  • bug spray
  • benedryl if you are allergic to bee stings
  • hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • hiking boots
  • hiking poles if you have them
  • lunch or snack
  • pencil to fill out wilderness permit (for the hike)
Directions from Reno:  take 580 south to Carson City, at the end of the freeway take Fairview Exit and turn Right onto Fairview.  Turn Left at old 395 So Carson Street, turn Right on Highway 50.  Stay on 50 going through South Lake Tahoe for a total of 27 miles.  Turn Right on CA-89/Emerald Bay Road.  Go 8.5 miles.  Trailhead and parking is on your Left
